This may not be caused by low coolant level, but this has been seen on this forum before. With the engine cold check the coolant level in the coolant tank. If it's below the LOW mark (or the tank is empty) then there is a coolant leak, which has to be located and fixed. Has the temp gauge ever gone into the red, or reading low? With really low coolant quantity with these cars it has been seen before that the driver never did notice the temp gauge in the red, but the same "check air conditioner" message popped up. The coolant pump can slowly leak coolant and not be noticed by obvious fluid under the car. Engines have been scrapped off because of low coolant levels. It's important to check the coolant level on a regular basis. If the coolant is not visible in the coolant tank then don't drive it very far to have it serviced/looked at, unless you add a water/coolant mixture (or water) up to at least the LOW mark (start and idle the engine for a few minutes, shut it off, and recheck the level and add coolant/water) until it stays at the LOW mark or higher.
