so the officially news on this issue as of yesterday after new tires

Well my front tires where down to bellow the wear bars at like 1/32nds
the rear tires had 3/32nds and the way i was looking before whyll watching the speedo on the avg speed readout after resetting it and also via iphone app speedo and hand held gps well it was off by 3mph at least that's what it was saying with the old tires

Now to report what it is doing with the new tires
well the new tires did change it i drove 50 miles on the new tires yesterday and when i checked it wasn't off by 3 miles anymore it was now down to 2 miles
so the tires did have something to do about it
and im just going to chalk the other 2 miles up and not worry about it but i just wanted to post an update

We said 2 was normal...repeatedly. Read again.

Nor did we ever say anything about 1MPH...or 3MPH. Maybe try reading everything twice?

I did the rereading for you:

Set the cruise and reset the average speed, I bet its 2MPH slower than what is on the speedo. Make sure you set the cruise when you do this so your own inputs don't affect the average.

Within spec, just know that its 2MPH fast.

Jeez!.......isn't it just amazing that the tire circumference (and the change in circumference due to tire tread wear) could affect the speedo/odometer.

I have my doubts as to whether it did to that degree, lets just put it that way. An iPhone app is hardly a scientific piece of equipment. I think had he done what we suggested, set the cruise control and observed the difference it would have been the same as it was after he replaced the tires.

Best evidence here is his assertion that the difference between the average speed readout and the speedometer went from 3MPH before the tires were replaced to 2MPH after. That makes no sense, the difference there should be constant as they are measuring the same data, just displaying it differently.

Where's the "beating a dead horse" smilie? OP, if it makes you feel any better, I have (and currently) owned BMWs and the speedos are ALWAYS 2-3% too fast. Just the way it is. Stop stressing it and enjoy your car!
