I'm sure someone has, but is it as easy as popping in the disk and that is it? Can the disk be used on multiple vehicles?

Well, if you have maps from say....2007...the 2011 maps would be an upgrade, even if they aren't the 2012 maps. Thats why they still offer the older maps.

If you have an 07-09 its a DVD, and it cannot be used on multiple vehicles. Its popping in the disc and thats it.

If you have a 2010-2012 its a hard drive system and the dealer has to do it. Prices for that vary greatly...

Yes,the post '10's has a USB Dongle and the dealer somehow gets one hour labor for the download. Also dealers get a special price on I believe 10 updates or more they buy at a time but of course charges the list price.

I was told 2 hours labor. $260 plus the $165 I was quoted. I'll pass...

For those of us with the DVD-based systems, here's the cheapest I've found so far:

These folks have them for $155 shipped

Are they burnable? Couldn't someone from this forum sell burned copies to other members for a few bucks?

That is why those of us with newer cars now have to pay the dealer $250 on top of the cost of the data to install our updates instead of it being something we can just do, people stealing the nav data.

Don't steal, buy the upgrade or just use the maps you have. Reproducing and distributing copyrighted information is a felony.

Ok - Just to be 100% certain. I have a 2007 ES350 that does have a CD/DVD built in. When I called the dealer about this - they said that it would cost me a total of about $280 to get the disk and have it installed.

It sounds like I don't need to have them do anything and I can just do it myself? Just pop the DVD in the drive and it handles everything?

When I originally got the postcard with this offer, I assumed that I would just be able to do it, but like I said - When I called the service department at the dealer they said that if you do something wrong it can mess up your system. I was a little surprised that it would be that difficult.

So with a 2007 ES 350 (with original maps in place), would I be OK in just doing it myself? Has anyone else done this?

Thanks in advance

I have a 2010 ES350. The USB stick is $169. I checked the dealer where I bought my current car and they charge 1 hour labor to install = $300 total. Checked the dealer where I bought my previous car and they charge 1/2 hour labor = $233. Both seem excessive IMO for a map update, but there you go.

I may get it done since my car has version 9.1 and the new release is 12.1 and we use the nav a lot on trips etc.

Yes, it's really a piece of cake. Your dealer is trying to scare you The instructions are in your navigation manual and also avalable on line. I have posted them on this forum. I am currently on a trip and posting this from my iPad, not my Mac. When I get home, I can find the instructions for you if you can't find them. DON'T LET THE DEALER PUSH YOU AROUND

ttodd, yes, you can swap out the DVD yourself. Use your fingernails, or a flat plastic tool, to push up and remove the gray plastic Lexus logo panel just below the NAV screen. From the screen that displays the Map DVD version, press the eject soft button. This will eject the NAV DVD. Insert the new one and snap the plastic cover back in place.
