Heat Shield Noise?
Hey everyone,
When I first got my ES, there was no knocking or pinging coming from the heat shield when I turned the car off. As the months are going on, now I'm starting to get a lot of knocking/pinging/clinging noises coming from the heat shield when I turn the car off. Do any of you have this? I've tried regular, mid-grade, and premium gas and it continues to make the noise with all grades of gasoline so its not the gas being used. Any thoughts?

I get the ticking as well; it's metal cooling at different rates. Briefly thought about going to the dealer about it; however every car I've had that went over about 25k on the odometer does it. Maybe reseating some of the screws/bolts around whatever's moving down there would help at first, but I'd bet money that the sound will come back.

Other possibility is maybe there is some dirt or something splashed up from underneath the car onto the shield. That might cause the temperature of the shield to be uneven perhaps ? Maybe look to see if you see anything on it....outside and/or inside.
If so, maybe try cleaning it...WHEN IT"S COLD !
As per the other member comment- suggestion, suppose it is possible it might "loosen up" after a while due to the constant heating and cooling causing expansion/contraction.
Wouldn't worry about it in any case..........

As suggested the ticking/clicking noises after shutdown is just the cooling down of the engine and particularly the exhaust system components, including multiple heatshields (I'm not sure what specific heatshield that you might be referring to). It may be more obvious in colder weather. It is NOT going to be affected by the fuel used.......knocking and pinging are terms in relation to improper combustion during engine operation.
