Check the manual, it should be pretty clear.
It will depend on the type of opener you have as well.
The older type without ROLLING CODES you just have to hold up to the car transmitter and hold buttons till the lights change.
The newer type with ROLIING CODES will require a button be pushed on the Door opener as well

I have a problem with garage door opener...I had a Lexus ES350 my next door neighbor purchased my lease when it was done. I now have my daughter's RX300. My door is programmed to the RX300 and the ES350 Lexus is programmed to my neighbors garage door but every time he leaves his home or comes back he opens (or closes) both my garage door and his. We have cleared the ES350 and the RX300 completely of all codes and once we program our respective cars (using Rolling Code/Home Link) we are back at square one. How can we completely clear everything and stop this madness? Thanks in advance!

Mine is the rolling type. The owners manual says to press the button on the garage door remote too, but doing that did not work. I simply pushed the button on the garage door motor, then held the button in the car. Maybe I had to pushed the button twice.
