Tyres replacement for 2008 ES350?
Hi Guys,
I have 2008 ES 350 on which I have driven a luxurious 42000 miles. Now the tread is giving up a bit and dealer asked me to consider replacing the tyres.
I went with the default tyres when I bought the car. So it has michelin 17 inch tyres.
Now My question is
1. Can i replace these tyres outside the dealership? will be it affect my warranty in anyway? Are there any cons ? if they mess up my TPS/wheel balance?
Any suggestions on a workshop in California area?
If I happen to go with the dealer, can i ask him to price match? Because normally the dealers are charging more?
2. I want to buy extended warranty for like 8 years and 80000 miles? which is the best place to buy it?
3. I want to upgrade my NaV system too. Anyone knows how much would it be to upgrade 2008 nav?
Thanks
Smallville

Smallville: I used tire rack to purchase new wheels and tires for my '07 ES. I like their WWW site because you can play with all sorts of combos. In the end I went with a 17x7 light weight racing wheel by Kosei and picked an all season touring tire based on a compromise between ratings and weight by General - Altimax HP. Along with new tire pressure sensors and a tool to reprogram the TPS codes to the on board computer it cost me about $600 more then the dealer's price for just tires. If I had it to do again I wouldn't bother with the TPS at all but that's just me. I believe the price of the sensors have gone down since I made my purchase 15 months ago.
I wouldn't recommend an 80,000 tire as it's likely going to provide more road noise. I went with 55,000 mile tires and the noise level seems similar to the OEM tires.

Only go to the dealer for tires if you don't mind paying FULL retail for the tires they happen to have in stock - which are probably ok, but nothing special.
I just got tires from Tirerack myself last month. this is at least the 4th set I've purchased from them - highly recommend them. They will ship to a local installer (you can pick on their website) - make an appt and you're good to go.
I do recommend having the tires done by a place that does wheels and tires as their primary business. I had them done at a Midas which will do tires, but is mostly exhaust and brakes. Their price was great, but had marks on every wheel. Not a huge deal since my wheels are beat up anyway (replacements arriving tomorrow thanks to a CL member!)
I had the General Altimax HP tires on my previous car (1999 LS400) and with the directional tread, they worked great in the snow and were quiet - although I think of it has to do with how well that LS is insulated.
I put some Michelin Primacy MXV4 on my ES and they are smooth and quiet. Not very sporty, but that's ok. The tires I had on the car before were a directional tread Goodyear Assurance. They made the car handle much better and had somewhat of a firm ride - but were HORRIBLY loud. These came with the car when I got it a year ago and I'm glad to see them gone.
TireRack has a good rating system - and you can read feedback from people who have used the specific tire. Any local dealer will tell you the tire they have in stock is pretty good - they aren't going to badmouth the tire they have and send you packing.
It's crazy how much the tire prices fluctuate - they're $145/ea now on TR but when I got mine they were $129/ea. (plus a rebate!) I saw the price higher before I purchased too.
As for the TPMS - they are on every newer vehicle, so any tire place can handle them no problem.
Oh yeah - no need to worry about the Lexus warranty unless you were to use a tire size other than the original.
Good luck.....
