Chrome chipping appears to plague the 5th gen ES, atleast up to 2010 MY. My window switch chrome trim started to flake and I had it replaced with an updated part which doesn't have the problem. Now the chrome trim on the glove box is chipping (no one touches it).

Not sure what you mean by "removing". If you meant "chrome delete", then using plasti dip would be one way. It's a spray can with rubber based paint. Very easily to apply and it can be removed withought hiring the surface underneath. Another method would be to wrap it in black (or any colour of choice). This will be much more difficult and may require a professional. Third method would be to paint it using aerosol can, followed by clear coat.

If you physically remove the chrome trim, you will leave exposed tabs or screws.
