Default Sound System

I bought an 07 ES350 and love the car. I made the mistake of trying out an LS460 with the Levinson sound... and wow. If I have the standard sound system.. (premium package I'm guessing) does any have the experience of upgrading aftermarket speakers or amp without affecting the ES's system.. ie bluetooth... etc.. don't want to touch that.

Advise appreciated.

Do a search for Polk (I think). One guy updgraded most of his speakers and documented the process.

I'll be starting this project as soon as it cools down in the fall.

OK, Blueshark, since searching is too difficult for you here are the results. The first is your thread.

I upgraded my speakers a couple of months ago. It wasn't that difficult. I took a bunch of pictures. If I get time to post them I will.

So did changing out speakers make that much of a difference without changing amps?

If you can provide the speakers you used too that would be great.

Gone are the days of donig simple stereo upgrades and HU swap outs.

I got these for fronts:

And these for the rears:
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_158GT13...26A.html?tp=97

And to tell the truth I really didn't notice that much of a difference. Probably needs more amps and better speaker wire and a better head unit.

I still need to download all the pictures from my camera and upload them to some file sharing site. Probably be around 5-7 megs each.

Or just resize the pics down to 1024x768 and save as .jpg - should be only a couple hundred kb each.

I don't think the speakers are so much to blame on these sound systems. I remember reading the whole system has like 100w and that's it. I would imagine aftermarket speakers would require even more power than stock to drive them properly. Somehow I knew making a real difference on this sound system wouldn't be easy/cheap. Ah well.......

Without knowing the sensitivity of the factory speakers, we don't know if the aftermarket speakers require more or less power to drive them to the same SPL levels. What I do know is most quality, aftermarket speakers will have a much better frequency response than factory speakers.

Over the winter, I will be tapping into the pre-amp lines before they enter the amp and feeding an aftermarket amp. Hopefully the addition of an amp and speakers will provide much better sound.

I'd love to be able to switch out head units but the only one I have found is around $1,200. The ES is an untapped market for a good mounting kit. It wouldn't be cheap but it should sell for under $100. I've almost purchased a broken head unit with a trim piece to see if I could fabricate a kit.
