After looking a little closer, there is a little notch in either side of the front of the arm rest. It's in the little piece that moves. When the cable comes through that notch, it is able to be pulled out further without much resistance.

I do the same. The mini plug runs from the belkin unit directly to the mini jack input in the armrest. So there's only one plug to the iPod. Also, the 12v DC in the armrest is "switched" so the iPod automatically turns off when you turn the engine off. You do have to press "play" when you start the car again.

Mine (4G - Photo & Nano) will not turn off immediately, but will PAUSE when you turn the car off (DC outlet is turned off). The i-pod will then turn itself off after a certain amount of time if I do anything.
