Lexus ES350 or Toyota Avalon?

Have you considered the Camry XLE? To me the Camry XLE is more similar to the ES350 than the Avalon is. I find the Avalon is rather ponderous in size. The Avalons I have rented didn't seem any smoother or quieter than the Camry's I have rented. And the interior of an Avalon doesn't seem any richer to me than the interior of an XLE.

ES 350 vs Avalon
You are obviously going to get a bias towards the ES 350 on this forum. I considered both cars when I bought my last ES. I enjoyed that ES so much that I did not consider the Avalon when purchasing my ES 350. My car was recently in the body shop to repair a hood dent caused by road debris. I had to pay for the rent car and ended up with an Avalon for a week as a loaner. It is a fine car but driving it for a week really validated the purchase of the ES 350. Toyota builds great cars but they lack the fit, finish and style of a Lexus. Having the sharp contrast between the two cars when I switched to the rent car and, again, when I switched back to my car confirmed that the ES 350 was the right choice for me.

Well if that's all that really mattered, then all of them Toyota owners would have bought a Lexus instead. I'm pretty sure the OP is already aware of the difference between Lexus and Toyota; purchase decisions aren't necessarily made based solely on a make's fit/finish over that of another--otherwise the OP wouldn't even be asking as to choosing between the ES and the Avalon.
