Wow...musta taken some lung power to blow all the dust off this thread !
Good idea to bring it back up to the surface again. Maybe it should be added to the DIY section so it is easier to locate when needed.

Cool

Forget that wiggling crap just take the entire manifold off. All basic maintenance on the engine starts with removing the manifold. By doing so you gain access to the plugs, plug rings, plug wires, distributor, intake ports, ACIS flap, upper intake air chamber and it's ports, EGR valve, IAC valve & Throttlebody.

So you might aswell take it off. It's not any work more to do so. Once you've done it once, it takes afew minutes to do from there on out.

Good piccies tho lig.

I've tried taking my engine cover off multiple times with multiple tools along with two of my rather mechanically inclined friends and we all feel retarded. What size allen wrench is used to get those two nuts off? Between the three of us we must have tried 10 difference wrenches, one of my buddies thought it might even be some sort of metric tool, but nothing. And I'm terrified to strip my nuts and then NEVER get the thing off. Any tips?

It's a Japanese car, every bolt/nut/screw on it is metric sized. The two little bolts that hold on the plastic cover should be 5mm. The two on the plenum I believe are 8mm. There are about 12 nuts/screws/bolts and a couple hoses that hold the plenum on or connect to it. Once you know where they are it takes about 40 minutes to remove. Once out of the way, as already noted, everything is easily available for removal & replacement.

so now that this car is over 20 years old.... should I spend time to remove plenum, or try Mr. Wiggly method? plan is to sell car, so less effort would be preferred.

I plan to clean throttle body at same time. I also have a CEL and it says knock sensor so I was thinking of doing it all at same time. not sure where knock sensor is, or what I need to remove to get at it.

Would the dealer do it your way and charge for removing the intake manifold/plenum and by the way how much would the dealership charge

Thanks

I believe dealer removes plenum but I'm not certain. Best thing would be to call dealer and ask how much to change plugs. I assume a couple of hours at around $100/hr, plus full pop on the plugs; as in $10 per plug. So maybe a $300 job by the time they're done (wild guess). It's free to ask them though. Lots of other mechanics can offer this same service.
