Default Side Mirror Cancer

Has anyone dealt with this paint problem themselves? How realistic is it to repair at home? I have cans of matched color coat, and a can of clear coat. I would like to find out what type of primer would be needed for this job.

When you said side view mirror cancer, I was thinking when the liquid leaks out of an auto dimming mirror, like this:

Painting that is no different than metal body panels except the prep work. There are specific cleaners and prep agents for plastic that you must use. And scuff the surface with a Scotch-Brite pad not sand paper on the step just before cleaning/prepping for primer.

I've had great success with SEM Soap for cleaning interior parts I see no reason it won't work on the mirror. It makes the plastic very porous almost to the point of absorbing water.

You could also consider vinyl wrapping it...

I would sand it with 320 grit, then prime with some epoxy primer and wet sand that with 400-600 and then shoot your paint and clear coat it.
Good forum for autobody/mechanical advice here ------>>>> http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/paint/

My mirrors look exactly the same. Started on my passenger side and just recently spread to the drivers side. Looking forward to seeing your end results!

Default Same issue fixed

I had the same issue. Flake off loose paint with fingernail, wet sand 1000, then 2000 then 2500. Wipe clean with regular alcohol, let dry. Be sure to mask if still attached to door.Three coats of paint, follow instructions on wait time between coats. Two coats of clear , follow instructions, too. Not perfect but pretty enough to take to the prom!! See pics.

Called Dupli-color at Oreillys auto parts store. About $9.99 a can. I only needed one can of each.
