Default 2001 es 300 clunks into drive

Just joined changed transmission filter and oil as it was slipping out of gear. Had a wine noise from top of tranny. Noise is gone now it clunks into 1st only, not reverse. Did not clunk prior to oil change. Any ideas.

Verify you have the fluid full. This is done when a) warm b) after shifting through all gears, and c) while running. It is still difficult to read the dipstick until it has settled a while.

This is the most common source of problems IME.

Only asking to eliminate the possibility of changing a too-far-gone tranny: your tranny fluid wasn't really dirty, right?

Tranny fluid was dirty, filter dirty. I figured the whining could have been from lack of oil to the top end. Whining gone now clunks only when put in forward. Fluid level is good. Clunk similar to universal joint. Car drives well and can shift into lower gears. No visible filings on magnets

It's likely not it, but try making are there's no slack in the throttle cables. Fixing this issue in my old ES and 4Runner fixed clunking shifting from reverse to drive and smoothed out shifts

Hope u put the right fluid. What did u use, dexron or T-IV?
Also, did you just drop the pan or did u also remove the atf return hose when u changed the atf. I am wondering if wrong fluid is causing the issue

Did not even think of the return hose. Just asking, but why would that cause the issue

Could be your transmission mount, or the dog bone mount on top of the engine. Could also be an engine mount.

The whine could be power steering pump. Low fluid or failing.

Thanks but that's not the issue. This is a tranny problem. The noise was eliminated with a new fluid and filter as I mentioned earlier and problem now is the bad shift into forward. Again thanks for your input

I should be clear that once the new trans fluid and filter was done it eliminated the whining noise. Thus oil was not getting to the top end of tranny. Emeadiatly after when I started the car to shift through gears only in forward does it clunk reverse shifts as smooth as always. The car drives and shifts through gears fine while driving. This only happens shifting from park or neutral.

I still would check the mounts as I suggested. At least eliminate them as a cause.

i assume your idle RPM is in the normal range
