When the steering rack seals leak, power steering fluid flows through the end of the rack where the inner tie rod connects to the rack. It drips into the inner tie rod boot, and because its slightly corrosive, burns a hole through the boot causing it to drip onto the sub-frame and ground.

2009 RX models are rare, since the 3rd gen RX came out in 2009, and the last 2009 models were produced in 2008. The 2009 RX I did test drive also had a leaking inner tie rod boot

Honest opinion: $9k is crazy.

The transmission hunting is unacceptable for a luxury car. It's a lazy transmission on the highway too when you actually need passing power. I usually resort to manually shifting the lever down a gear because the car can't seem to figure out what I want.

The rest of the car was great though. Had it not been for the transmission, I would probably still drive it. I handed it down to my sister.

I am wondering if the Japan made 2nd gen RX are any better when it comes to steering rack issues? Also, are the replacement racks fixed for this problem or even those might leak after sometime? If the new racks are good, I am thinking just account for this cost when buying a used rx
