Default New Struts from Rock Auto leaking?

I purchased 4 KYB struts from Rock Auto.
The arrived today. I opened the boxes to check them and found the 2 front struts had a petroleum product on the threaded rod coming out of the body. There was discoloration on the painted surface at the top of the strut which looks like it could be this petroleum.
Is this packing grease to keep the rod shiny?
Or are the 2 struts leaking?

The first 2 photos show the mat black finish of the strut body and then the beginnings of the shiny petroleum.
the third picture is a full shot of the petroleum
there is not staining inside the cardboard box they were shipped in

The other 2 struts - the rears, are dry on the body and rod

It's OK

I started writing a much more sarcastic comment, but then I appreciated the fact you sought comment vs. sent them back. Wise to ask.

When they stress the struts for packaging, they put it under much more than average use (those white strapping tapes). It's ok if some fluid is forced out. This is normal. The rears don't do it as they are tuned to lesser pressure (weight bias of car).

What is really going to protect your new struts is new boots, or at least intact prior boots if you choose to re-use. They keep debris from hitting that strut piston cartridge, then getting dragged down into the piston seal on the cartridge and creating a defect/channel in it.

Don't put those nice new struts on and then leave them exposed to road debris. Make sure the boots are solid and protect the pistons and keep debris out.

The tech from KYB said it was from production and not to worry
Installed them yesterday, all seems dry.
