Default How do I diagnose check engine light on 1995 es300?

The local O'Reilly's doesn't have a scanner that fits. Hoping to check the code without paying...any other options to consider?

Go to Advanced Auto or Auto Zone. You'll get your code.

Went to Advance Auto and the guy tried unsuccessfully for ten minutes. He was tried to read the code from a port under the steering wheel. Should he have been using the Diagnose port under the hood on the passengers side?

I've heard of this happening before, 1994 was the first year Toyota and Lexus had OBD-II (wasn't required until 1996) so some readers don't work properly or at all. Port under the steering wheel is the one you use.

Hello,

As LeX2K pointed out earlier, the car has a pretty limited OBD2 support, if any. Here you can find a detailed post on how to use Toyota proprietary diagnostics that came before OBD2 became mandatory, there should be a Diagnostics port under the hood and a round one under the Drivers kick panel, both of those should work.

Hope this help and best of luck!

It depends on the code reader they are using as well. I get my codes read from the port in the fuse box to the left of the steering wheel on a a regular. I am currently combating code P0170 fuel trim, so if anyone has any info on how to fix this I would be eternally grateful. I have taken it to firestone and they have performed a smoke test and repaired vacuum lines and the code came back. I have replaced plugs, coil packs, injectors, Mass Airflow sensor, fuel filter and fuel pump. I am thinking that it may be something electrical.
