Is my transmission failing or is it my speed sensor?
1997 Lexus ES300. Under 140k miles.
Sometimes on the highway, I will notice my car will be going 60-70 and the RPM will be just under 3k. I usually notice it sits at a comfortable 2.1 to 2.2k at this speed.
I havent noticed clunking, slipped gears, etc outside of this.
It COULD indicate that the O/D isnt engaging, but I believe when I was first driving, turning off O/D at this speed brought it up to at least 3.5k.
Full disclosure, I replaced the front ball joints a few weeks ago and accidentally removed the entire brake mechanism (brake caliper and spindle, could be a misnomer) when I wanted to just take off the front brake caliper. I believe this threw off the speed sensor, causing the speedometer to drop to 0 and the odometer to blank out at times. I know I need to work on this expressly, I just have been working overtime and literally cant find the time to get under my car.
Would this possibly impact shifting?
Edit: Honestly I dont even know why I'm asking.. Im going to look in to the speed sensor this weekend, so I will update once that is done to see what happens. Hopefully this will be useful forum search fodder...

Just under 3k rpms is normal on the highway. Never saw my ES at 2.2k at 60-70 mph and I'm a very observant person. I don't think you have anything to worry about. You would definitely notice if overdrive and 4th weren't working, you'd be close to 4K on the highway instead of 3.
