Default VVT...I screwed up!!! Help!

Hello fellow Lexus owners.

I am hoping someone can hold my hand on what have done.
In replacing the cam seals I put the engine at 60 degrees...marked my intake and exhaust and crank in relationship to block/metal...pulled the timing belt and then pulled intake gear.

OPPS! It moved!! Now I have no idea how to get it correctly positioned in relationship to crank and exhaust. If the VVT wasn't part of this I could do it...but there is about 6 gear teeth in both direction and my intake cam is out of its original position in relationship to exhaust and crank.

Does anyone know how on earth I can get it right....now that I am 10 to 30 degrees out....I have no clue. The manual does not offer any real help on this...
Thanks so so much
John

Which direction? Have a picture?

I am afraid this is what they call "dissection", take the engine a part, take every piece out, put 'em back in correctly.
It's going to be very spendy on labor hours.

Default Explanation

Ok so..
The vvt was pulled and while it was being removed the intake cam only moved counterclockwise. So when I put on the gear as you can see in pic I have no way of getting cam set correctly due to the variability of the vvt. The pics show the range of motion left and right of the vvt when installed on guide pin of cam shaft. So... Is there a way to line exhaust cam as a guide for intake cam? Crank and exhaust never moved only intake...I would pay someone to walk me thru this ...I'm serious! Thks I can pm someone and call and pay for help

Ooh, looks like you're deep in it, man. Good luck getting it fixed.

We have a lot of great and very helpful, knowledgeable members. I'm sure you'll find someone who has experience and will help in fixing it.

First off, what type of car and what year are you dealing with?

I have an older car without VVT but here goes.

I dont believe a cam locking tool would work anyway, because from the looks of it there are no places to lock both cams together. The VVT on right appears to have a solid sprocket, unlike one of the left where the sprocket has spaces inside you could put a lock, or a holding tool. Also, 1mzfe is a non interference engine (at least the older NON vvti) so you dont need to lock it.

Can you just twist the right cam around into place? From the pictures youre showing it is either too far left or right, so you appear to be moving it. The cam jumps because of valve springs riding on lobes of camshaft. You can try taking all the spark plugs out to make it a little easier to turn because there wont be compression in cylinders. I would just try it by hand. Just turn the cam by hand and put the belt on. You appear to already have moved it enough in both directions to get it lined up. If the valves hit a piston you would feelt it and not be able to turn in that same direction. There would be "interference" preventing it from moving. That is not to say the engine is technically a non-interference motor, simply you would definitely feel the interference.
