well this is kinda of dumb for me to ask since i don't own one of these years but have seen the questioned tossed around but not definative answer
so for everyones benifit i thought i would ask
if any one person has a 97-99 es with the taillights being different and a 00-02 with the clear center
would pull the light off and take a pic (when they have some time) of the back of the light and of the frame where the holes on the body are
also if they measured the distance might help also
this would help anyone who wasn't sure and wanted to change them to the newer style which i think look much cleaner and not half as busy
it should only be basic tools to pop them off
well i hope this helps someone in our lexus community

these pics would probably give an idea of how the brake light is wired, dunno about fitment...

here's the outside, unfortunately i cannot get the pictures of the back of the lights like you want. but my dealer told me that they arent just easily swappable

This is the one mod that a ton of 97-99 owners want to do, and I can't say I blame them. From what I recall from previous discussion on the topic, the new lights will fit (sheet metal the same or very similar), but the mounting bolts are in slightly different places. This means there may be some drilling/sealing of holes involved.

After seeing some of the lighting modifications on these forums, nothing is out of the question--for example, I've seen the 98-03 GS headlamps placed in a 1st generation GS with skilled body work, and some of the BMW/Audi "color flicker" projector swaps into Lexus headlamps are nothing short of amazing, not to mention the GS with the Infiniti Q45 composite projectors in place of the reflector bowls.

So, yes, it's possible, with a bit of work and/or money. Just carefully research the drilling/sealing, and if you don't feel comfortable, take it to a body shop that does custom work. Around my place, I'd take it to a local shop that does custom cars/street rods (vs. a place that only does collision rebuilds), as those people are used to custom-installing of parts designed for other cars.
