Question 2002 ES 300 console interior light

I just purchased a 2002 ES300 with 54K on it for $11,200 drive off! This thing just had the TB replaced at 52K. It literally looks like it was just driven off the showroom floor - immaculate!

Ok, enough chest beating and back patting. I noticed in the lower center console, there appears to be a clear plastic in the rear where a light might be, but nothing lights up. IS there a light there, and if so, what do I check to troubleshoot it??

Default Console interior light

Hmmm. You got my curiosity up so I went to my 2003 ES300, opened the compartment, and there it was. It looks like it should be a light but I couldn't cause mine to come on so I sat in the back seat and carefully pried off the panel that has the two a/c duct outlets on it. From there you can see a chrome plated screw that holds the light (?) in place. I removed the screw, pulled out the light and it doesn't look like any light I've ever seen. Anybody else have an idea?

Okay, so I'll answer my own question. It is a light and it came on after I started the engine and turned the headlights on using the switch on the stalk. I opened the compartment and there it was. Now, just like a refrigerator, I don't know if it goes off when I close door but I think this one doesn't.

No dice - waited until after dark, headlights on, engine running, no light! Would they put a light lens in without putting in a light? How exactly did you remove the rear AC vents so I can see if anything is actually there?

Don't try and remove just the a/c vents. If you'll look carefully the a/c vents are contained in a panel that covers the back of the compartment. You'll see the outline of the panel goes just under the arm rest at the top, around the sides, and then about 2-3 inches above the center of the floor "hump". (It helps to move both front seats forward to get them out of the way.) Carefully insert a prying device in the side area and pry the cover off. There are no screws that hold it on, just clips. You'll then be able to see the screw and light referenced in my previous post.

Reading this thread made me go out to my ES330 just now to check out that light.

Its just the light inside the center console box. It comes on with the tail lights and lights up green.

This is an '02 300. Do you think it would be different?

OK - what exactly do you call the center armrest console? I have searched 100+ pages looking for info on this "light" and cannot find ANYTHING! Even a mechanic with AllData can't even find a wiring diagram for it!! I can't even find a MENTION of it anywhere on the internet (except MY post!)

In my 2003 ES300 the center console is the area upon which I rest my right arm as I'm driving down the road. Mine has a shallow top covered section which has its own release mechanism and then a deeper section which also has it's own release mechanism. This lower/deeper section in my car is tall enough to hold cd cases and such. It is this section that has the light near the top referenced in your original post. The latches are on the front side and the a/c vents and panel (for lack of a more descriptive term) are on the back side or back seat side.
We both have a 4th generation ES300 but I'm not sure if I have a 4.1 or a 4.2 (4.1 2001-2003, 4.2 2003-2006) so I don't know if your car's center console and mine are exactly the same. If I was to guess I'd say they are the same but I don't know for sure.

I'd assume all the 4th gen ES consoles are the same unless the console light was part of the 2005 facelift.

Ahhh. My favorite kind of repair: Free and it works out your aggression. Glad you got it fixed and if it goes out again, you know how to fix it again
