Transmission FLUID Dump and Fill, How Much?
Haynes states change is 3.7 quarts which I assume also includes the torque convertor. ( would have been nice to include that info )
Well, I just wanted to change the filter and and refill with Valvoline Max Life Dex/Merc Full Synthetic ATF.
Meets and/or exceeds Dextron II minimum requirement by Toyota.
Bought 4 quarts.
Drained and removed the pan.
Replaced the filter, Torqued everything down. CHECK.
Issue, Fill time:
it only took around 2 quarts
So be warned, DUMP and Fill is around 2 quarts. ( my oil catch tray only had 2 quarts in it )
As far as the left over quarts, I dumped and filled the differential to about 0.9 quarts ( per Haynes) until it dripped out the side while car was level. CHECK.
Wow, the shift transitions are allot smoother. I think I will dump and fill one more time to dilute the old fluid even more to 3 to 1 ratio plus.

Nope, it shows at COLD max when car is idling in the garage. I will check after I take her for a long ride and bring her up to Operating temps. Maybe it is just my year/gen. I know I put more in when I replaced the Torque Convertor awhile back. OEM dipstick and trans.
It is weird.
But now that I filled only to cold max it does not clunk into reverse. Prior to it it was between Hot Max and Cold Max. Still butter smooth shift transitions

Did you run the gearshift up and down the gears a few seconds each before checking the fill level?
If not, the level will read artificially high as some valve bodies, journals, clutch packs can be drained back. They all need to be pumped up for an accurate check. If I do NOT do this, mine will read well above max hot.
I have never found "max cold" and " max hot" to matter much, as long as it's around one or the other.. The thermal expansion coefficient of atf is a very small percentage, and if you do the math it adds up to a difference of a very few ounces between STP and operating temp.

Yes, after fill I went threw each gear normally and slowly to feel if it clunks into gear.

The Haynes manual would not include TC volume; that's only something you have to deal with in a tear down/rebuild (got on on my bench right now!). It is not part of any normal drain/fill. The volume here should be about 3.5qts and this may indeed be one of those unusual times the Haynes manual is almost correct. My ES 300 is a generation later than this, but I think the volumes were about the same. I have the U151E and the drain/fill is about 3.5qts. Newest generations of the Aisins in the Camrys are actually less than 3qts I understand.

Just did a trans drain, trans pan removal, new gasket and filter on a 99 Camry 1MZ-FE yesterday.
There is a lot of fluid that stays at the bottom of the pan, keep in mind the car was jacked up only in the front.
We refilled a bit over 3 quarts.

Very weird. What are the fill specs for a 99? I assume same as a 96 1MZ-FE?.
Well I decided to do another Drain, Semi Flush and Fill.
Saw a fella on Youtube. He drained his trans, with the plug open, he filled a fresh quart of fluid until the drain came out as clean as it could. Hmmm a nifty little trick without force back flushing or opening lines.
I will give it a try and post.

Dump, Safe Flush and Fill
Reserved for Test Semi Flush and verification of fill capacity of 1MZ-FE 's transmission up to 1996.
Warmed her up to operating temps and verified fill level at the dip stick. Level is right in the middle of the hot full marks. CHECK.
Drained her hot into a measuring cup. 2.65 quarts.
Added a quart for a test flush. Yeah, poop ain't going to work, there is 7.1 quarts in the system.. I put 10 thru it so it is pretty flushed, maybe 80+% ???
Drives MUCH MUCH Better and reverse clunk is gone :-D
