Default ES300 Misfire

I have a 2001 ES300 that is not firing on bank 1, cylinders 1,3,and 5. The car started running rough and the trac off light and check engine light are on. The car runs worse when the check engine light flashes. i checked the coils while the engine was running and all 3 coils are not firing on that side. I swapped one out with one that was firing but no change. Also when the car is running rough the brakes are not real strong as they normally are. This started a few weeks ago then it went away, now it is running bad again and im lost. Please help.

Sounds like the OCV. Should have an error code produced. Have you checked for codes to verify problem? If not, get them read or buy an OBD II reader and check them yourself. OPD II readers are relatively cheap and they come in handy. A basic one will run about $30.

This is similar behavior when one of the O2 sensors failed in my '98. A flashing CEL is the ECU telling you there is a serious fault and you shouldn't run the engine until it is fixed. You can cause expensive damage. In my case it was faulting all 3 coils and the danger was to the catalytic converter. It was a very easy fix, it was the front sensor, actually called the "Air/Fuel Ratio" sensor.

Check your Fuel Pressure Regulator, mine failed and thru bunch of CEL codes indicating miss-fires. replaced, issue gone and drove much better
