Exclamation Squeaky Serpentine Belt/Pulleys

Hello,

Has anyone had a problem with squeaky belts or pulleys? My car squeaks mildly whilst idling and without the a/c on, but when I turn the Air Conditioner on the car squeaks like crazy and gets louder upon acceleration, so bad to where I have to turn it off because it is annoying and quite frankly embarrassing.

A mechanic told me the serpentine belt is slightly worn but it shouldn't be the problem as it is not worn too badly. I have looked a lot online about this problem and through a homemade test I found on YouTube, I think I have narrowed down the problem to either a misaligned pulley, belt being too loose, or a bad tensioner. It is extremely hard to see down where the pulleys function so I can't determine which pulley is bad or if one is misaligned or wobbling. The belt also seems to bounce a bit when I turn the A/C on as if it is loose?

My question is: Has anyone had a problem similar to this? What did you do to fix it? How much did it cost?

I'm new to Club Lexus and I would appreciate any help anyone could give me.

Thank you very much,
Brady

That's what I was going to try first as well, hopefully that's the issue and that mechanic was wrong. Thanks for the response!

This is extremely common in all cars. It is caused by the belt becoming loose with age and stretching. If the belt is worn, or rather if it has cracks in the ribs it is not worth tightening the belt. Simply replace it.

It is HIGHLY unlikely that the pulleys are out of alignment, that would indicate a failure which is unheard of. Moreover, the belt would simply leave it's track if that were true.

Belts are simple and easy to replace, the common symptom is noise like you detailed, they can be tightened, that is if they are not about to fail, once tightened they often fail shortly afterwards, because the noise indicates they are at the end of their life.

try a ;new belt, but your story sounds like the a-c clutch bearing could be bad. take the belt off and run the car to see if the noise goes away, and try listening to the a-c with a long screwdriver up against it, or the ps pump, and your head to see if you hear which bearing it is. when you have the belt off, spin the idler pulley and listen. what yr car do you have?
