Default 95 ES300 issues after changing valve cover gaskets

Hello all,

I changed the valve cover gaskets on my 95 ES300 1MZ-FE. In the process, of course, I needed to remove the intake manifold to access the rear bank. Being 20 years old, there were several parts that broke and needed replacement:

Now when I try to start the car it usually doesn't start. Sometimes it will catch and run smoothly for about 2-3 seconds then die. If I give it any gas while it's running it dies immediately.

I double checked all the vacuum and electrical connections and it seems everything is connected properly. I don't believe the 2 modifications I made will cause this issue.

Any ideas what went wrong? Where to check for issues? Thanks.

You need to replace those broken parts they are there for a reason.

Thank you for the response. Could you please clarify? What do these parts do exactly and how do they affect how the engine runs?

I think the last picture shows that you're missing a connection to the lower intake manifold, leaking vacuum heavily. Replace/plug that hose and see how it runs.

Edit: I just checked techinfo - you broke the A/C idle up VSV. That's a huge vacuum leak and is likely causing your issues. I'm seeing a lot of new hose too - go over your other connections and see where you hooked something up wrong too. A good Toyota/Lexus tech could get this solved for you in an hour's time if you had the new parts.

Hi, any plastic pieces that appear to be nipples of sorts that vacuum lines connect to absolutely need to be there. If you don't want to spend the cash for dealer replacements, you may find similar pieces in the "HELP" area at Autozone.

If you have the pieces and are handy with superglue, you might be able to restore them. Find a dowl that is the same size of the opening to check your progress before the glue dries.

the purpose of these plastic pieces is to keep a constant vacuum. It this is changed, your engine will run either too rich or too lean. This is what is causing your issue.

Usually a shot of wd40 will help remove rubber from plastic for any future endeavors.
