Default 98 es300... what is the max tire that will fit

I'm looking to put in 16'' rums and tires. The rims have been purchased and now I'm curious to know if:

225 50(55) r16
215 55 r16

Will fit?

Basically looking to see what's the max I can place in the vehicle without affecting the stirring (rubbing)

Factory is 205 65r 15
205 is how wide It is
65r is % of tire lower number is a more low profile wheel higher number is usually for let's say a truck with small rims fat tires
15 is the rim diameter.
If you want your odometer to read the correct number when you lower one number another must get higher and vise versa. So here is an example of what I did from factory to 225 45r 17.
I have a 0.02% change because i increased 2 inches of rim but basically lost that in tire making them low profile. Now the width you can play with if you want to make them fat 225 no difference 235 can touch but you can use spacers. If you want your rims to be 16 inches and width 225 you can with 55 as percentage of tire practically no difference in size just a little more low profile.

I appreciate your time and all that you wrote, I am pretty familiar with how it works but I just do not know the parameters of the car....Specifically what the tolerances are with the steering and wheel wells.....

Esp seeing now as I am changing from a 15" rim and stock tire size to 16"......I am trying to increase handling and road appearance with a wider set of tires, I just do not know how wide I can go until it becomes a problem....

would you happen to know what that is? Or anyone for that matter given the age of the vehicle Im sure this maybe tough to answer

thanks,
Dayana

The limitation on rim width on this car is determined by the clearance at the rear struts.

I have a Solara (same suspension and chassis setup as the Lexus ES), and I was able to run my OEM ES330's tires (215/55/17 Michelin, 17x7" rim, 50mm offset) on it with ~2mm of clearance between the tire and strut. I'd consider that the absolute minimum clearance.

However when I put OEM Lexus IS300 rims on it (215/50/17 Uniroyal), the tires rubbed and I needed a 3mm spacer to clear the strut. Some tires have a different profile and will bulge slightly causing it to rub the strut.

From this you could derive the maximum wheel width you can run is 7" @ 50mm offset, or 7.5" @ 40mm offset, using this wheel offset calculator:

That Website is Awesome....I was able to compare 4 tire sizes at once!

So the 16" rims I purchased are FAST and they have a 42" Offset.....To get to the point, esp with the information Just provided above, Does Anyone know if a 225/50R16 Tire will be too wide for a 1998 ES300????

If so I will simply drop down to a 215

thank you all,
Dayana
