the cable provided with the OEM mirror is to 5 to 6 inches long and looks like it plugs into something already inside the controls for the sunroof.
I'm confused.

Here's a tutorial for a Gen 6 Camry. The procedure should be similar.

alright, I just took apart the overhead console and I'm not pre-wired for an auto dimming mirror. I dont mind the challenge and buying one and cutting off the plug, and wiring it in myself (I'm assuming that the mirror just needs a positive and negative to operate)
but when I look at the wires in the pics of the auto dimming oem mirror, it appears that there are 3 wires and not just two.
what could the other wire be for?

interesting. guess I'll buy it and check it out. I read the tutorial for installing the aftermarket one and I know where to get power from so I'll just take a chance and see what happens and report back.

as you can see in the above link, there seems to be actually 4 wires instead of 3 that I thought. dammit : /

I put an OEM mirror in my '98 ES some years ago, and recently took it out (as I'll be selling the car). It had only two wires -one to be connected to the hot (when ign is on) and the other to be grounded under a chassis screw. They went to a connector to be plugged into the back of the mirror. I had connected them to the roof console - the "+" tapped into a sunroof switch wire, I believe.
