Default mysterious thump in rear -suspension?

I have a 99 es300 with a thumping noise in the rear when going over bumps or moderately rough road that I CANNOT LOCATE. No suspension mounts or bushing seemed loose or worn, and nothing obvious under the car. I took EVERYTHING out of the trunk. Same noise.Mechanics checked under the car and couldn't find anything. They suggested it could be upper strut bushings so I took the rear seat and package tray out and 1 mechanic drove the car and another rode in rear to see, feel, and hear the upper strut bushings. They agreed that was not the noise scource. I have eliminated every scource I can think of, and the noise is still there. Any ideas, suggestions, please.

I'm not saying that's your case, but many times people are 100% sure that the noise is in the back, yet it's originating from the front, or even somewhere else, such as the exhaust system.

The origine of noise can be very misleading. Don't throw any parts at it until you positivley identify the source of the thump.

I just had this diagnosed FINALLY, a few weeks back with my mechanic after hours. We took bungee cords, tie downs, etc to various components in the back end to see what is making the loose sound. To me it almost sounded like a loose sway bar smacking against the under body.

Turns out it's the parking brakes... I'll be gutting mine in a few weeks time when its time to switch over to winter tires. I don't use them, and the noise they make pisses me off.

I've never serviced them nor will I.

If you want to determine whether its the parking brakes, I suggest going down a road that's a little worse with bumps/potholes and as you're driving over some bumps, you should hear the noise, and once you engage the brake ever so slightly, you'll fin the noise goes away going over the same bumps.

I couldn't believe it when my mech. showed me [I was in the car].

I have the same irritating noise. Its been there ever since I've owned the car more than 6 years ago. Think I may check and see if the same cause.
