Where does the fresh air come in for the A/C vents??
This is probably a stupid question, but I'm curious as to where the origination of the air for the cabin comes from? I was cleaning the car today and noticed that the vents right under the windshield wipers were horrendously dirty (i.e thick moldy paste packed into them). Not sure how to effectively clean them, but is that the air I'm breathing?

I actually have a 97, but might need to look into that. My filter location is near the pedals, however it never came with one from the factory. Apparently this is pretty common, so never really had the motivation to put one in, but after seeing all of the crud on the vents, makes me think otherwise. I am curious as to how the system works though, as a fair amount of water must go into those vents when it rains and has to be let out somewhere. Makes me wonder what kind of chemicals I should use so I don't exasperate the problem by breathing in mold + chemicals

im pretty sure Japanese engineers figured it out. i would not put any chemicals in there either.

When I installed a cabin filter in my car, I used Condition Aire to clean out my HVAC. It's sold by Lexus and works pretty well. I found moist dirt and old leaves in my cabin filter opening. In addition, I was having allergic reactions, which I've never had before, so I figured it might be from the mold inside the vents. That was last spring. I haven't had any allergies this past season, so I guess it worked.
