Default Blower (heater and air con) on 1998 ES300

The car is parked outside this winter. On days below say 30, the blower will not come on. If it warms to the 40's outside, it works.

The two days the blower would not work were both under 25 degrees.

The days it has worked it was 40 and warmer.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

The blower will not blow any air until the coolant warms up to a certain temperature. It than should start blowing. Depending on the ambiant temperature, that may take a few minutes.

Is that not the case?

Phil

what happens if you manually turn the fan speed up, what does the display show and what does the fan do?

All sytem displays look normal.

Here we are back to 50 degrees today, and it works fine. Plenty of air being blown..

My problem is when the outside air drops to 20, the blower stops working.

Its hard to help if you don't answer all the questions...does the blower work if you manually adjust the speed? Guessing no but you didn't say. The climate control, when in auto mode, does not turn on the fan until the car warms up a bit, so there could be a problem with the unit sensing that the car has heated up.

The service manual does not detail any problems with the blower other than it doesn't work, so the not working based on outside temp is not a straightforward issue. Have you checked all fuses? There is a blower motor controller and a blower motor resistor that could be a problem as well, again it seems a problem there results in no blower at all. You would need to test each component what is your expertise and what tools do you have, at least a DVM?

You can run a diagnostic and get some trouble codes, the manual says to hold the recirc/fresh and auto buttons down while turning the ignition from off to run, it should run through a systems check and display any trouble codes.

The blower does not work when the outside temp falls below a certain point. Example, yesterday in the 30's it was fine. This morning at 17, it will not work.

The blower worked fine with all manual adjustments yesterday, but will not work at the cold temp today and the manual adjustments don't make a differance. The adjustments show that it is working fine in both cases.

I don't have equipment to test the components. I will try the diagnostic check.

Thanks

OK gotcha now. It is strange that the blower doesn't work based on temp, not a failure mode the service manual covers, and also the blower equipment is entirely inside the interior, so even without the blower the interior should eventually warm up to the 30deg and beyond to where the blower would work no matter the outside temp. Have you taken any longer trips does the blower eventually work on a very cold day?

Without any ability to diagnose, you'll have to locate and start swapping parts, blower module, blower controller, blower, climate control unit...

When the blower does not work due to cold ambient temperatures, try driving the car for about 10 minutes to let it warm up, than turn the engine off and on again. Does the blower than work normally?
