Just finished and the answers are: no, the splash shield does not have to be removed and no, the differential does not have its own drain plug.

PS. The ATF was very dark and overfilled by 2 1/4 qts. I would bet anything that whoever did the trans service at 98k did not drop the pan or change the filter. I bet they just added a couple qts of ATF. The old fluid was not foamy so I hope the overfill did not damage the trans.
