not fun replacing on these cars. i have a 04 es and if you have small hands its not that bad., just take your time. Its been a while since I changed mine, hope someone has some pics. to help you. I remember a wire clip that was hard to get in place. hope this helps.

Really depends how flexible and small your hands are. I haven't had a problem changing them. You could remove your battery on the LH side if you had to. The complex steps you're probably seeing is removal of the entire housing which requires you to take off the front bumper.

Completed. The solution is to take the battery out. Key notes include: 1) when taking the battery out, hold onto the j-hook that secures the battery, 2) taking the battery will reset the radio and seats but that's all, 3) taking out and putting in the light are a mother of a task. Having a tentacle and x-ray vision would all come in handy.

Figured it out
There was not a fuse for the lower beam, and that ended up being the issue. I also notice when that fuse was missing the light in the dash that warns you your rear brake lights are not working, also comes on. So typically if this dash light indicator is on, you have a fuse or bulb issue. Thanks!
