Default Wierd OEM exhaust

What is the diameter of the OEM exhaust piping on a 1994 ES300? I read that it was a mix of both 2.5 AND 2.25. Is that true? Because I just had a pretty interesting visit to the muffler shop...

nope, it's 2" all around with sections where it's squished intentionally for some unknown purpose

Wow, a whole different measurement. People really should make sure they know what they're talking about before giving out important information like that.

No I believe you. What I mean is that people who don't know what they're talking about shouldn't give out information like that. It misleads people.

Ok, I just measured my exhaust piping and was surprised to find that it is in fact weird. I used a caliper and took measurements of each individual section, and apparently the diameter is 2.5 from the y-pipe to the resonator, and 2.25 from the resonator to the muffler. EEngineer said it was 2.0 all the way through, and he isn't necessarily wrong. Keep in mind he does have a '92 model with the 3VZ-FE engine, so my guess is that the exhaust diameter is one of the minor changes Lexus made to account for the new engine.

Oh, well it was as I said, "interesting." The reason I was going was because I wanted to get a second muffler installed since the exhaust was a little too loud for my taste with just one. It's a pretty weird setup so I might have to take a picture to show you what I mean. Anyway, I had been told that the diameter of the factory exhaust was 2.5" so I bought a 2.5" diameter muffler. Seems simple enough, right? Well it wasn't.

The guys at the shop who are supposed to be "professionals" cut out the section of the pipe that the muffler was supposed to replace, and then fitted the ends of the pipe into both ends of the muffler. Now I could tell just by looking at it from 10 feet away that the muffler was way too big for the pipe it was being welded onto. So I pointed it out to the guy and he was like, "Oh yeah, it doesn't fit." So I thought, "And you waited until NOW to tell me that? You couldn't have told me before you tried to put it on?" I was pretty pissed off. So he welded it on and I paid and was on my way.

When I got home I measured all the diameters down there and found out that from the engine to the resonator it was 2.5", but from the resonator back it was 2.25". I also found out that Summit Racing (who I ordered the muffler from) sent me the wrong part. Instead of the 2.5" muffler that I ordered, they sent me a 2.75" one. So now I have a 2.75" diameter muffler welded onto a 2.25"diameter pipe, with a whole bunch of backpressure messing up my free-flowing exhaust. Since then I have ordered the same muffler in a 2.25" diameter and I'm waiting for it to arrive in the mail so I can have those "professionals" put in the right part this time.

So yeah, it was interesting.
