I specifically like this generation. I also considered the Acura TL Type-S they are a similar price for 02-03, 260hp VTEC with a 5 spd auto. But they also generally eat a trans every 50k miles so I went with the more pedestrian Lexus for less trouble.

Spot on for the trannys in those, total junk; what a shame for such a cool car. I think most hondas in the 98-mid 2000's (maybe even the new ones too) had problems with autos not lasting much past 100k; I don't really trust Honda autos, even a buddy of mine had an early 90s accord with like 80K on it and it was shifting like a whiplash induced roller coaster ride

Just about the fill up the tank second time tonight so I can check mileage, I have done a mix of driving. WRX was about 20 in the same driving, here's hoping the Lexus can beat that! Mileage is not a big deal, I looked at a new Camry Hybrid, 40MPG or better and faster than an ES300, but 32k with all the stuff I'd want, I can buy a lot of gas for that money! Maybe in a few years I'll get one of those the wife and I would like to hedge our bets with future oil prices.
You won't have any trouble beating 20K miles, and if you wanna get on ecomodder.com I'll bet that you could get near 30mpg avg; I would love it if you shared anything you do off of there and how it affects your mileage, and I will do the same in return.

I did the first fill up this week. A little disappointed, 19.6 MPG. Not really knowing what to expect, it is not a big deal. About the same as the WRX. Thats fine with me, I just expected a bit better since I drive slow in the Lexus but the Subie makes you drive fast.

I drive quite a bit of city miles, only 3.5 miles to work, live near Boston, not much highway. The WRX could get 30 on the highway at 55mph(with normal drivers whizzing by at 80). I'll have to wait for a road trip to try that in the ES.

I also have a bent strut causing bad rear alignment so that could be slowing me down a bit. Will fix that up soon.

Power6, that is a sharp ES. Where in MA are you? If you need parts Jacks or Hollands is the place to go although it's rare that an ES is ever in a salvage yard. Ira in Danvers is also the place to go for service when its too cold out to do regular maintenance (forget about Ira in Manchester, like a totally different world there). I get the same MPG around town; I can get up to 24, sometimes 25 if it's all highway driving.

Congrats on the new car.

Like everyone already stated, these are great cars for the money.
Very reliable and easy to DIY.
I'm still on the original engine and tranny at 310K miles with only some minor oil leaks on my 98.

Good luck with your car and post any mods should you do any.

Thanks guys. GoodRevs I am in Arlington now, just bought a house in Wayland we are moving later this month. This car was serviced at Lexus Watertown since new by original owner from Newton, but my buddy had an old GS300 and had a great relationship with the service manager at Lexus Northborough so I might take it there. I have a 2 car garage at the new house, and I have done a timing belt no problem, seems like the older I get, I have more capability but less time ;-)

Sounds like 20mpg is normal around town, so that is good.

Updating this thread a lil still loving the ES. A lady hit me in the Starbucks parking lot down the street a couple weeks ago, was def her fault, insurance covered. I could have pocketed the $700 or so but I couldn't drive around like this...

I dropped it off this week, Safety insurance has this nice VIP plan for newer cars, you just drop it off and they take care of the rest, have a rental for you, guarantee the work etc. The appraiser said a 2001 is not normally eligible for the program but he was amazed how nice mine is ;-)

This worked out great because the original bumper had a number of little knicks and scratches. but not any more!

Still getting around 19-20 mpg. The wife can't even top 19 in her Outback XT. Goes to show how slow our commutes are, we live close enough to work, I never get on the highway its all backroads and traffic. The rental I had was a Yaris, I got 29 where it is rated 30 city, so I feel pretty good beating the EPA 17mpg city of the ES300.

Still gathering parts for a suspension refresh that is coming soon.

I think the body shop waxed the car up, part of the process I guess, so it looks really nice.

I've never been much for tinted windows but I was thinking about getting them done lightly to keep out some of the light and heat.

I think it looks best with the factory green tint. Congrats on your new bumper, the car looks super clean!
