Exclamation 2002 ES showing "4" gear when in Drive

I bought my ES 2002 last year from a private party (fireman) and when I bought it, on the dash it would show I was in "4" gear even when I had the shifter **** towards the "D". I've been driving it for about a year now and haven't had any issues but I wanna Know if anyone else has experienced this issue and how they fixed it or what it could possibly be?

I don't believe there is an OD button. Is the trans actually running in 4 or is it simply the light indicating such?

Make sure the shifter is over to the right side. It should be at D.

If it is, then go out on the highway. Drive with the shifter lever in "D", monitor the rpm's. Then, slide the shifter over to "4" the car should downshift, and you should see a gain in rpm's. <If it doesn't do this, then there is a problem somewhere. Maybe a pending CEL.

X2, that's what I was thinking, but I didn't want to sound like an ***.

if you were in 4th on a highway - you would surely notice, unless you drive like a grandma 40mph in right lane. your engine would rev noticeably high and loud in 4th when going 65-75mph.

how did the guy explain this to you when you bought the car?

I'll post some pics in the morning. But it's definitely on the "D" regardless what the dashboard is showing.

If I can I'll upload a video. Thanks again guys.

If the shifter is in the right place, then the next thing to determine is if the trans is in 4 or 5.

If you slide the shifter to 4, does the trans downshift or simply stay in the same rev zone?

Try to count the upshifts while accelerating. It might be tricky if you can't go from 0 to around 50mph in one go.
