01 ES 300 transmission randomly stopped working. HELP!!
Yesterday on my way to work I sensed the transmission was slipping a little..something that had never happened before. When I left work later in the day, the slipping immediately worsened and within a minute it wasnt engaging in any gear whatsoever..not even reverse. I just had it towed to a transmission place, they havent diagnosed anything as of yet but Im worried theyre gonna try and get me to replace the entire transmission.
I mechanic friend of mine checked the linkage and said it wasnt broken..
Anyone have a clue what the problem might be?

You don't mention the miles but it sounds like you are looking at a rebuild.
Hopefully you checked the fluid level ..............
The 2000's can have two different transmissions -- not sure about the 01's
Look on the driver door -- it will give you the info AT xxxxxxx
My 01 w/ the more expensive unit was $1700 to fix at 220k

Its only got 125,000 on it so I cant imagine its already shot.
Ive had transmissions completely fail on other cars, but the slippage happened over days or weeks, slowly worsening until it stopped engaging entirely.
With my Lexus, this all happened within 3 miles of driving. I had zero trouble with it before yesterday.
fluid level was fine.
Someone told me maybe its a pump within the transmission itslef?
One thing I forgot to mention...maybe related, 2 days ago when I arrived at work, a little bit of grey smoke billowed from under the passenger side of the hood..lasted like 2 minutes then stopped..I couldnt see where it was coming from so I just assumed it was from the oil drip Ive had for a while..although I had never seen any smoke before then, or since. Transmission was working fine though until a day and a half after I saw that smoke. Its probably not related but who knows.
