Default Weird "bucking" on rapid acceleration from dead stop

Hello,

I have a 1994 ES 300 with 320,000 miles. Over the past year or so, I have noticed that from a dead stop, if I give it a lot of gas to try and accelerate quickly, it bogs down, hesitates and bucks UP UNTIL it gets to about 10MPH and above. Sometimes this bucking can be VERY pronounced. Now, if I am at a rolling stop, and give it a lot of gas, the condition is much less pronounced. This even worse if I am needing to accelerate facing up hill. Now, if I start from a dead stop and give it just a little gas and let it get to rolling up to about 10MPH, I find I can then apply a lot more gas and it will take off and accelerate normally, sometimes with no hesitation or bucking at all. And, if I give it a lot of gas at high speeds, it has no problem at all down shifting and taking off. It DID NOT used to do this. I also know that at 320,000 miles, it ain't no spring chicken anymore and any "normal" acceleration I am referring to here is not near as solid as it was in the first half of its life. I suspect something with the low (1st?) gear and possibly the automatic "clutch" mechanism, as it almost mirrors what you get starting from a dead stop in too high a gear. The transmission is original and has never had any work done on it. And, at this point, if it breaks down, it will lie where it lays! I.e., when something major next goes, it is headed for Pick-a-Part.

Any thoughts as to what might actually be going on here? The only real risk is that there is no way I could rapidly get out of the way from an almost dead stop in heavy traffic situations, but other than that it gets me where I need to go still.

Thanks!

Mark

I had the same thing happen on a different vehicle. Was the PCV valve. When was the last time the spark plugs were changed also? When the plug wears down it will hinder your acceleration if I'm not mistaken.

Same happened to mine and I had to change the spark plugs and pcv valve. My97es had 153k on it when it started and I bought it with 145k and didn't know when the last time they were changed.

A partially blocked catalytic converter could exhibit such symptoms.
