I've put 20x8.5's with 225/35/20 on all four corners on a 2nd Gen ES. I had put spring spacers in the rear to compensate for a heavy trunk, even then I had slight rubbing in the rears.
I believe a better fitment of 20's would be on a smaller tire than I had and going with 20x7.5.
Personally I don't think 24's would clear the wheel well easily, even lifted.
If you can stick with 20's, but if you have to have bigger rims than you might have better luck with 22's than 24's.
Most 22's and 24's I've seen are pretty wide too, so if you do go for it i'd try finding a 22 or 24 that isn't as wide.
From what I've read on these forums putting 22's on a 3rd Gen GS is a pain in the *** (why I stuck with 20's on the GS), so trying to put something bigger like 24's on a 2nd/3rd Gen ES would probably be even worst.
Good luck.

i have 20 inch wheels...225/30/20...defiantly love the look but wish i would have gone with 18 or 19inch...i don't rub or touch but need more tire...i feel everything on the road.. i may try 225/35 and see if i can get a better ride but you should really think about it!!!!

struts and mounts will not stop your car from sagging however they are important to keep your new 20 inch wheel firmly on the ground!!!! the tires are too expensive to be bouncing down the road...chopping (feathering) your brand new tires will create alot of road noise..if your vehicle has more than 60 70k and there original its time for new ones....springs take a long time to sag..i would replace the struts and mounts first and add your new wheels (no lift should be needed) would recommend kyb struts and mounts..look up an XL parts in your area...hope this helps..
