I installed the TYC, which is cheaper, but as I didn't like its charcoal smell, I decided to order a Denso from Rockauto. Much to my surprise, when I removed the TYC and compared it to the Denso one, I realized that they were 100% identical, (cheap plastic frame, fragile filter element, colors, no brand imprint, and of course the same smell) that is, both TYC and Denso have the same cabin filter supplier...

^^ That's interesting, I picked up a Denso filter awhile back, and it's not like that. No smell and was the same as the original (never changed) I took out. I wonder what gives.

This whole cabin air filter thing is interesting. Does it make a tangible difference in air quality to replace them?

I'm looking at mine tomorrow, but I am afraid to pull mine out as I know they haven't been changes in the 16 years the car has been around.

Yes, I wish I knew. Take a look here:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/es3...e-97-01-a.html
The plastic frame is solid grey, the filter element is thick, sturdy and looks well designed to trap all dust and particles. My aftermarket Denso has a dark green frame and the element (light brown) is made of thin paper with black charcoal stains on it. Definitely looks cheap.

The air quality inside car usually is not good, and it can be worse if you don't keep up with the maintenance.

Maybe your car does not have a cabin filter. Otherwise it would smell really bad after all these years.

there are 2 types of filters. particulate and carbon. the particulate has no smell.

I may be wrong but I think that there are two main types of carbon filters in terms of quality. The one in the thread https://www.clublexus.com/forums/es3...e-97-01-a.html looks top quality (OEM?).

I had a Denso and but (2) aftermarket for $11 each. You can see in the link below that the OP and Lexask8 is two different filter. The OP's filter is better (which is the case I am in).
