01 Lexus es300 misfire
Hey guys, new es owner here. It's my first car and I'm now only just getting into the car enthusiast scene. I have little to no mechanical knowledge, and I just want to see if anybody had anything to say about my issue.
I bought this car for $800 thinking I would be able to handle it. I was indeed not able to, went way over my head. Not sure how, but valves were bent and timing was lost. After that discovery, someone spent 4 months rebuilding it, all for it to have a misfire. We assumed it was the gas tank being dirty, so a part time mechanic spent 3 months cleaning it. The misfire is still there. I know there are many many possibilities for what this could be, so if anyone has any information or knows a common problem with these cars your feedback would be appreciated. I will most likely be sending it to a shop soon, just want to see what I can takeaway from this and how I can help.
Edit: The mechanic who is working on it doesn't have a scan tool, so he is getting someone to scan it. Once it is scanned it is up to me to send it somewhere.

Mechanic has no scanner? Wow, that's unusual he must mainly work on old cars.

I would scan it to see what it is, but my money would be on a coil pack. Find out which cylinder has the misfire, then swap that coil pack with another cylinder, then see if the misfire moves with the coil pack. You can get a basic scan tool at Harbor Freight or Amazon for $30 or so.

Next, I'd ask you to consider a Lexus ES300 is NOT a sports car.
Don't ruin your car by trying to turn it into something that it isn't.
