Default Autolock

Whats up with the autolock features for the 97-2001 models. How does it work because I would park my car in the garage and the next morning when i have to go to school it would still be unlocked, but I remember once in a while i would leave the car unlocked and when i got back to my car it would be locked. Can anybody tell me how the autolock feature functions?

I think if you push the unlock button on the key and don't open a door for 30 seconds, it automatically locks again. If you don't lock it in the first place as you get out of the car, then it won't lock.

I had the same question when I first bought my 97 last year. The car does not lock on it's own like alot of the after market systems do. It auto locks when you unlock the car but don't open the door.

the same thing happens for my mom's rx. it beeps to open with the wireless remote, and then like after 15-20 seconds if i don't open the door (or make it to the garage in time), then it just beeps and locks up on me. i think the car has to have the separate wireless remote. like my dad's 93 es has the unlock/lock button on his key, and i don't think it does that. or i've never actually tried. but like we've unlocked the doors like far away, and by the time we get there, it's still unlocked. i think it's only the newer gen's

it's not just on the newer ones. my 94 has the lock/unlock on my key and it locks after 20 seconds or so. the difference is that it unlocks all doors instead of just the driver's door.

The reason why newer model car keys open just the driver's side door and not any other door when pressing unlock once is cuz of safety. supposedly if a person (lets just say a woman for now) is walking alone to her car and a rapist or other bad person is preying on her, she is more vulnerable if all the doors open up automatically, whereas with the newer keys, just the drivers side opens. Like if the rapist is hiding around the passengers side of the car waiting to get in, and the woman doesn't see him, she still has a chance if she gets in her drivers door, and drives off...rapist is left pounding doors.
also, the intervals between how long the car will wait til it automatically locks itself back again can be reprogrammed. these reprogram codes are called "c-best settings."

i know that my car unlocks all doors with one key press, which i do not mind. i just want a trunk unlock on mine too.

Well...also if someone is running after the car trying to catch it, they are much more likely to reach for a rear door.
