The '96 I'm working on has not speed indication or miles counting. I replaced the speed sensor with one from a junked car, no change but the sensor I took may have been bad.

Default sensor

Code was the P0500. I have searched all over that car for that speed sensor and have not found it. it is the U140E transmission. So i have been driving it like this for 2 years. Of course now it smokes like no other so i think its time for a new vehicle.

The 3-wire speed sensor on an ES300 is below the battery box. You can get to it by removing the air filter box, which takes 5 minutes. You DO NOT need to remove the battery box. You can just view it without removing anything. This is the more expensive one and sometimes the gear gets worn, which is not part of the new sensor, you must purchase it separately. On the 1999-2001 ES300, there is no gear, the VSS and clutch sensor are both magnetic and identical sensors. IF you replaced the sensor and still get the P0500, then you may have replaced the wrong sensor, but if not, then take some fine sandpaper to the male contacts on the connector and clean them. The surface oxide often prevents proper electrical contact.
