98 ES300 CEL with P0402
just picked up 98 ES with 107k miles. just did timing belt service, and rear struts replaced at local mechanic and also fixed exhaust leak, flex pipe had a hole and made loud noise so he cut the flex pipe and welded with different flex pipe. otherwise i had to replace the whole cat. well, erased the codes and no more exhaust noise but next day cel came back on and got p0402 and p1142(??? not sure) and he said it was my egr valve and told me to keep driving it as it won't effect driving. but i noticed after car sitting outside for few hours and when i start it it sounds like it has exhaust leak again(definately sounds like there is a hole or leak from the front end) but when it warms up you can barely hear it, and also when i accelerate i doesn't sound like there is a leak.... now what i am describing...is it related to egr valve? i am lost.... cause it definately sounded like a exhaust leak but after car warms up you can barely notice it.... any suggestions?

The EGR valve in image below should cost around $80 from Toyota in Socal. Your labor = FREE. Check your EGR modulator for dirty diaphragm. Pry it open, clean diaphragm, if you want to save it and snap back, OR buy a new one.
