Exclamation MAJOR PROBLEM 2000 ES300 bank 2 failure

Heres the story. Its a 2000 ES300 82k miles.

Car had a rough idle- check engine light went on.

P0300 - random cyl misfire
P0302 - cyl 2 misfire
P0304 - cyl 4 misfire
P0306 - cyl 6 misfire

All ignition coils have power going to the plugs.

Fuel Injectors all have power going to them.

Compression tested 2-4-6 all tested OK at about 110ish when tested.

While the car is running with the rough idle- If I pull either 2-4-6- ignition coil connector or injector coil nothing changes and it remains rough-....but when i remove connectors for 1-3-5 (the one in the back) the cars idle gets REALLLY BAD. So we know the 1-3-5 bank 1 is running ok

The problem is located somehwere within bank 2.

I am lost as to what it can be. Any ideas?

Did you notice anything before the check engine light came on? Was it running hot? Your compression is very low, Alldata spec it at 210 psi, with 140 psi min. Have you checked the oil and the rad?

Nothing weird really..

I drove it for about 10 mins on the freeway doing 65-80mph. As I was parking the car I noticed it started to have a slight rough idle.

Then when I came back to start the car a few hours later, thats what I found.

I had just done a coolant flush a month or so ago, and the engine oil is ok.

I looked on some other forums and some guy had the same codes and problems-
he took it to a dealer and they replaced the vvt actuator for bank 2...but some people are saying it might be a bad ecu or even a bad mass air flow sensor..

I doubt that the mass flow sensor would affect only one bank. The ecm uses separate drivers for each injector, so that also would be hard believe. The vvt could explain the low compression. When you check compression, did you remove all three of the front spark plugs, and hold the throttle open? PS it is a good idea to have the helper who cranks the engine, hold the throttle full open, (this will put the ecm in flood clear mode, and turn off injectors. you do not want the cats to be loaded up gas).

I didnt have open throttle while doing the compression test.

But I tested some more things on the car today. I took out the vvt actuator for bank 2 and tested to see if it was actuating, which it was, so I can rule that out.

We have power going the bank 2 coils and injectors, but it just isnt firing.

So basically, whatever controls bank 2 is not working, all fingers now point at the ECM

Now I dont know if this is possible...but maybe a Toyota Tech would know...Can I possibly reset the ECM? or Reflash like when a car gets chipped.

did you check for electrical signals at the various plugs[not spark plugs]?

The confusing part is that power reaches the coil, all of em, but the sparks dont fire on 2-4-6....So Im just lost on what it can be besides the ECM

We checked t he wiring harness leading to the ecm and it was good.

This may sound like a stretch, but did you check the sparkplugs themselves with an ohmmeter, I had two brand new, less than an hour of operation fail on me, that too was a puzzler, I have an older 3s, with the wires and all.... but still, no spark could just be as simple as the plugs.....I totally agree with the above post re: compression test, mine read between 210 and 225, the vvt makes things a bit more complicated, but try squirting some 3in1 oil in the cyl, then read the compression.....if it jumps up significantly then you may have some sort of problem with the rings/cyl. If it does not could be the valves, could be the head gasket. Are you seeing any smoke from the exhaust? Good luck....

I'm right there with CaliChris, Ignition Coil.

She came home one night and told me it was skipping at the stoplight.

After I found out which coil it was.......My error code was Bank 2, Misfire Cyl. 2, Misfire Cyl. 4, I don't remember the exact code # it through up.

This was off one of those orange uni-code readers.

Tried to save a buck and get the Napa/aftermarket ones, don't do it if you go that route. Go ahead and get the one from the dealer. I bought 2 of the cheap ones within 2 weeks, before we figured out they were junk.

Problem was the ignition coils....

It was 3 or 4 bad ones...but I went ahead and replaced all 6 with oem from Lexus.

Car started up and ran strong right after...

Glad it was this and not an ecm or some electrical issue...Damn coils tricked me a bit.
