Default Fixing the Mark Levinson rear sub rattle issue on 03 ES300

My '97 ES300 is finally kicking the bucket at 205,000 miles, and I found an 03 with 114k in great condition.

Didn't realize the rear sub/speaker was rattling until I got halfway home with the car. Doesn't happen on classical/etc music. I was freaking out for a little while, but after doing a lot of research it looks like an extremely common issue that can be fixed with some glue. It seems like some people actual removed the rear seats to get to the subwoofer, while others may have popped the grill off the top of the sub. It's hard to tell since this problem seems so common across all Lexus models so the discussion is never focused on the ES.

Not sure if anyone here has been through this. I don't understand a lot of the discussion involving the parts of the speaker (headliner, etc). I want to do this myself and use the best possible glue or adhesive rather than just a hot glue gun or whatever.

Can anyone give advice? Namely on whether popping the grill off the sub works, or whether I actually need to take the back seat out and all that. I need my music without that rattling!

Thanks

I think I will get the speaker re-foamed instead. Or will at least look into that. I will have to get up the courage to remove the subwoofer through removing the seats and all that.

I've never removed one so can't help you with that, but why not just replace it with a modern sub it will sound much better and they are not expensive.

People here seem to recommend against it since something with the ohms, and the system is meant to be together. I think it sounds fine. It's an incredibly crisp system, it just needs to not rattle.
