20's on just about any car/SUV look way too thuggish for my tastes as far as looks go, however, looks aside, the ride quality suffers so much, and in order for the wheels not to rub, you'd have to go with a very low profile tire. If that were to happen, heaven forbid you hit a pothole at 20+mph then you're looking at the least a bent rim. On the older ES, I wouldn't go more than an 18" maybe a 19" but that (to me) doesn't look all that practical. Slooooow has a good lookin wheel, I think that's a 19". I wouldn't go that big, but I do like its look

I put 18's on my 98 with 245/40ZR18 tires with no issues. i wanted to keep some sidewall to protect the rim and keep some of the lexus ride. Some members are running larger rims, maybe they'll chime in.

Couldn't agree with what you said any more. And in fact, mine are just 18s. (Thanks for the props, by the way)
In terms of expense, performance, aesthetics, rotational mass, etc., I wouldn't go any bigger than an 18.
With anything 19 or bigger, you're raising the vehicle and moving into the Dubs territory (not that there's anything wrong with that - if you're into that scene)

Cool

There you have it from Crawlerdan. With Gen 1,2 and 3 ESs, it's too much wheel (aesthetically and comfort-wise).
It seems like I've seen some Gen 4s with 19s or 20s and it looked fine, though I can't speak to their comfort.
