Default Average MPG = 17.5 city. Normal?

Hi, I drive a 2000 ES, 95% city driving. I've kept my gas receipts for the last year (and wrote down the milage on each). I've averaged 17.5MPG. The best ever was a trip to Chicago were I got 22. I use premium gas, and have NEVER floored my car. I generally peak at 3.5K RPM if I'm in a hurry. I have 85k miles on it.

My mpg seems a bit low to me. If gas hits $4/gal this summer as people say, that will start to suck.

Ideas? I'm the third owner. All work has been done at the dealership. They say I need some new front brakes soon, but thats it.

Thanks--

City involves alot of stop and go driving and a whole lot of idling, one of the things most people do not think about when trying to determine how much gas mileage their car is actually getting.

Are you running the AC alot? Do you warm up the car before you set out? Going over 3k rpms will eat up more gas too.

I'm averaging roughly 286 miles to a tank. 95% city driving. Of course I don't let the needle go down to empty so I do not know how accurate my info is, but I do fill up at about the same mark everytime.

I actually did a test on my ES, I have a 2000 as well.

I used to average anywhere from 270-290 a tank and thats with 80% + city driving.

I then did a test while driving palm springs and got 245 miles to half a tank. Which was amazing, and that was 95% highway.

I recently did seafoam on my car, and an oil change. I plan on running another test to see if my ES has improved.

I would say its around the lower end of normal, nothing wrong I would think.

EDIT : Link to test I did https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...+test%2C+245.8

Thanks for the link. It looks like 17 city is the norm. Anybody getting better than that? Any tips? I just took my car out for lunch and I hit about 2.5K RPM in a normal acceleration. Can't do it much slower.

Does TRAC use extra gas? I can turn that off in the summer without danger. I always leave the Overdrive (O/D) switch alone.

Cool

^^^("Welcome" in binary code) to ClubLexus and the ES forum, Gammamonk.
That's an interesting handle you chose there; bettin' there's a story behind it.

I had to look up my car on that site as well. OMG! (attached)
It would be sad, indeed, to have to dump my stylish, lovely Boulevardier for something more fuel efficient - like a Honda Fit, Nissan Versa or Chevy Aveo, but...

Exclamation

hi
Although this has been discussed in a previous thread we still get urban 19-20 and highway 23 -25 at a sensible pace. maybe the 2.5 litre is a bit better on gas than the 3.0 ?

As for Gas prices we are currenty paying on the exchange rate $8.30 a Gallon in the UK

We have gone through a heavy Tax burden on fuel in the past 3 months , with crude oil @ $50 a barrell, this seem to be effecting most countries.

So we do keep the foot lightly on the accelorater at most times, but have a good blast out on Pay Day !!
