ES turns 140
My beloved 96 ES will turn 140,00 miles this week. This is quite a milestone for a guy that grew up driving American junk that were basket cases at 100,000, so I wanted to celebrate a little with this post.
I plan to keep this car forever since it isn't worth too much as a trade anymore. Likely will get a Prius and keep the ES as second car/toy.
My ES is very well maintained, and drives and feels great. Worst thing is the leaky window seals; any remedy for the air leaks? How much would it cost?
Car gets 17-18 mpg local driving and 26-27 on interstate. Is this typical. Anything that would increase mileage? I think premium selling for $335/gal today so any suggestions welcome. Would cleaning injectors/fuel system help? My mechanic wants to do this for $90... is this a good thing? Last time was at 85,000 miles.
The exhaust system is still all what came from the factory, including the catalytic convertor. Seems to me this thing should be a little clogged up by now, but it doesn't run hot or make any noises... still I wonder if there is any clogging restriction that is affecting performance/gas mileage; any way to test this, or not to worry?
Considering a K&N air filter. Does this actually help with accelleration and/or gas mileage? What would it sound like? Are replacement filters expensive or hard to get?
Are there any issues that typically need looked at on a high mileage ES?
Any suggestions that would keep this old car running the way it should greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Congrats on your 140K. I wouldnt consider your car to be "old". Heck I dont even consider my 92 to be old; its still a baby. As far as the gas mileage that sounds pretty good for the car. Have you had to replace your O2 sensors yet? Id bet that would be your best bet for getting a little better mileage rather than a fuel system tune up. I see no reason to clean the injectors or anything like that if it runs good still.

Congratulations on hitting 140,000 miles on your ES. Your car is still young and has plenty of life left. All you have to do is keep up on the maintenance. Happy driving.
I also have a 1996 ES 300 with over 310,000 miles and she runs great. I just changed the oil last week and I also put in a new air filter. I used to use Mobil oil for years and would burn some oil and then I recently switched to Castrol oil and doesn't burn as much. I also like using the Toyota OEM oil filters. I wanna see how far I can take my ES 300...

we're actually considering a used insight as our second car and making our ES a project car. 'cuz ours gets upper teens in the city and lower 20s highway too.
check for oil leaks, those happen with time. keep up on maintenance and this car will take good care of you.

congrats on the miles
if u wanna clean injectors, do a search on seafoam. It works great but becareful with it. Sometimes it takes a big chunk of deposit off and plugs up the injectors. Unusual but happened to me.
For window seal air leak, what i did was peel back the black rubber seals and stuffed as much foam tape as i could in there. Works great, its been a year and no problems. I mean i still have some wind noise from all over the car but the window seal noise is gone. It was unbearable before i fixed it.
