What to do? assistance please-tranny problems
Okay so I am driving down to Treasure Island this weekend to enjoy the beach right, wrong! I'm doing 80 mph on I-275 and my tach is jumping 500 rpms. It usually did this at 40 miles an hour when my tach is reading 1500rpm. The tach would bounce between 1500-2000 rpm's because the engine was jerking (idk why). Never at 80 mph though. My rpm per speed was 60mph=4,000 rpm, 80mph= 5,000 rpm. On a side road I was doing 30 and my tranny just went, no gear at all. I let the car sit and started it back up and it had the tranny again, but it didn't go out of 1st and revved high, then it slipped again. My car is currently sitting at a gas station overnight so I can get it towed back tomorrow. My tranny has been rebuilt before with rebuilt parts, my uncle said that the people who serviced it screwed it up, so it wasn't on Toyota reliability.
So I need help on to what my problem is, torque converter maybe? How much the service will cost? And the best place to get parts? I am considering after getting it fixed to sell it for an older GS or LS or something, I want to stick with Lexus and the next car I want is a rwd or manual.
Opinions please, thanks

Were you driving the car hard?
It sounds like the shift sensor. There's a magnet inside and its probably cracked.
Mine went out a few years ago when i was driving it really hard for a long time. It had all the symptoms that you described.

Pheonix: I knew how to change the fluid, but I don't think that is it. But neat video

I changed my trans fluid, and it smelt like a retirement home Any ways, yeah it was pretty dirty, and at least it my car works. The fluid change seemed to take care of it but it still is shifting odd, If I have is in 1st and shift to 2nd it won't unless I put in in drive. It doesn't downshift. And it takes longer to shift gears know. The car seems slower, will this where off and how good does Seafoam transmission work?
Well for now my car is back
P.S.: Pheonix, thanks for the help, and changing the fluid would've been the first thing I have done. The last people that worked on my tranny did a poor job. All of the trans pan bolts were finger tight and one bold under the tranny while the pan off was dangling. You can't trust other people's service, they want there money and then the next car's $$$

Sounds like you are making progress Hopefully the fresh fluid will work it's way through the system and clean out any gunk. I haven't any experience with Seafoam but if that old fluid smelled and looked really nasty, perhaps a good cleaner is in order. Might even consider consulting a professional xmission power flush if DIY doesn't do it or if the seafoam is expensive..
How many miles since the rebuild?? Hard to imagine them using the old fluid but if the bolts were all loose, who knows There are reliable and honest people out there, sometimes hard to find though.
Keep us posted!!!!!!
