Default Help changing sparkplugs

Alright, we're taking on the task of changing the sparkplugs in my GF's 99 ES300. We were able to do it on her '97 Maxima (V6) when she owned it, so this can't be much more difficult from what I've read.

Are there any how-to's out there on changing the '97-'01 ES sparkplugs? Is the procedure IDENTICAL to changing a V6 Camry's plugs? I heard that I need a torque wrench, a 10mm and a sparkplug wrench, and that the rears may require removal of the plenum. Obviously I searched here on CL, but to little avail.

I called a Toyota dealer who wanted $260 to change the plugs (and who does a timing belt change for $250!), so we'll happily do this ourselves.

Any advice or links?

Thanks so much!

There is no need to remove the intake for changing spark plugs. use extention and once you lose the spark plug ( one turn ) then use hand to unscreww the plugs ( of course with extention on it )

It takes time but slow and steady wins the race .

$250 for timing belt . Let me know if you find one . At least $ 450 + .

Good Luck

I just got the ES timing belt changed for $250 yesterday at a local Toyota dealership. PM me and I'll give you their number.

Also, thank you for posting something productive, other than "search". The reason I posted is because I see one sparkplug writeup (https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ght=spark+plug), but it's for a '92 ES. I know the engines are incredibly similar, but with the VVTi, I wasn't sure if maybe there were some subtle under the hood changes that made things a lot easier/more difficult to access. I could find nothing referencing a procedure on a V6 Camry.

Thanks in advance

Cool

From the link it looks like 1992 ES rare spark plugs are easily accessable as compared to 1997 . May be the engine is tilted more towards the firwall, for 1997 to 2001 models . use long extention simililar to the tool in the link . Then use hand . Thats the way I did and changed them successfully . Now my Higway milage is 28 and in city is 24 . Make sure to inspect closely the appearance of the old spark plugs.

$ 250 is very cheap for time belt change . Even the pep boys charge $ 400 + . May be somekind of deal from toyota . I remember change my Nissan sentra timing belt for $ 200 way back in year 1996 by pep boys .

Wait for it....

Orrrrr.

You could be productive & not waste everyon's time, including your own, with another useless spark plug post. There is no point to you being lazy. Posts of this nature don't bother me if it's a question that hasn't been asked & ANSWERED thousands of times.

That's an un-refined search & there are pleanty of answers. Suuuuuure is hard to click search & type Spark Plug....
Seriously man, it would be annoying if you asked a new question, but give people a break.

Ya sub786sub, the pre '97 engines are much easier to do. Their Upper Intake Air Chambers don't take up as much room. 2vz/3vz are the relatively easyests because you don't deal with the WS, or COP setups.
The best is when you ditch the lifting hook, support and the EGR. Then you've got lots of room to get back there, it's simply a reach around. Even more useful better - the UIAC is only held on by 2*14mm nuts & 2* 8mm allen bolts. Taking the entire UIAC off is reduced to a 2-5 min project including tool gathering time.

I'm not clear on how I'm 'wasting everyone's time'. I searched and found a pre-'97 post, and wasn't clear on the differences. I actually found more information under 'change PCV valve' than under 'change spark plugs'. But you already knew that.

I asked an innocent question after having searched. If you're upset with that, please deal with it in a PM or something more professional.

Thank you, sub, for your help.

This is a post that was written "pretty good"... I do not recommend the Bosch plugs he used...

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-1st-gen-1999-2003/83257-spark-plug-replacement.html

If you're skilled with tools ... and have a little patience.

He didn't comment on finger tighten the plug, then an additional quarter turn. (12-15 Ft Lbs torque) A little never-seez paste on the new plug's threads is recommended.

Apologies for any considered insanity ... We do try to accommodate
