Pheonix said the headgasket is bad on the 3vzfe. I dont think so. I believe what has happened on the interweb [haha] is the truck engine has been confused with the car engine. The truck engine is the one with the notorious head gasket problem. The lexus/toyota 3vz-fe only has head gasket problem if the car over heats, which is indemic to aluminum head-iron block design. It's the pretty much same thing though with an al-block al-head, but not as much an issue with iron block iron heads. I'm shortening this by talking like, but I want to clarify that the head gasket doesn't just go bad on a 3vz-fe.

As a suggestion, you should contact Paul woods from Woodsport. He does mr2 v6 swaps and is well known for it.

3vz all the way

1MZ has really bad knock sensor problem and being an OBDII, it is a pain in the butt to tune.

however, it is a much more rev happy engine and has better top end than 3vz.
the 3vz on the other hand has double the low end torque than the 1MZ

the 3vz block is 470lbs. this is a whole 70lbs heavier than the 1MZ.
the iron block is bullet proof. I've never heard of a 3vz blow the block, but the headgasket problem is very common if the car doesn't get maintained properly.

The headgasket is made of a graphite composite material, which is why it's so weak. The newer 1MZs all have MLS headgasket now but no other manufacturer is making MLS headgaskets for the 3vz unless you want to custom make them.
I know a guy who custom made 3vz headgaskets in copper but wsa unable to make it in MLS. Cometic wsa going to make it for the mr2 v6 guys but that plan fell through.

eitherway, 3vz all the way.

Owning both a 1MZ and 3VZ, I can say that the engines are quite similar in characteristics. Logically the 1MZ should be a more refined engine seeing it is newer, but really they are about the same IMO. Actually I think the 3VZ idles quieter because the 1MZ has noisier injectors. The 3VZ definitely has more low end torque, I can smoke the front wheels easily, on the 1MZ not really at all. I don't find the 3VZ to be lacking in the upper end, the engine will wind out to the redline no problem, although probably not as fast as the 1MZ.

Which engine do I like better? Well seeing my 3VZ is in a Camry and the 1MZ in my Lexus, not really a fair comparison the Lexus has better NVH control. But I love the fact that 3VZ almost never throws a code, you can't make the engine knock to save your life, and it runs on regular fuel. The 3VZ is a beast of an engine, just feels bombproof.

I can understand why Toyota had to come out with the 1MZ due to emissions concerns for starters, but the 3VZ is just simply an awesome engine, and they run forever. I saw one at my local wreckers that had 560,000 kilometers (336,000 miles), someone had removed the exhaust camshaft from the back bank for some reason, the internals looked fine to me. The interior was absolutely beat and the body was trashed, probably a big reason it was scrapped.

^x2

and totally right about injectors.
1MZ uses 280cc/min injectors which is a bit of a waste, having only 200hp, the maximum duty cycle the injector will ever reach is like 70%

3VZ uses 230cc/min injectors which is sized just right.

^i think i just realized why 1MZ have 280cc injectors.

because maybe 0.01% of all the 1MZs will get a supercharger slapped on it at some point lol!
